Graphics Cards

The video graphics card(also known simply as Video Card) is and expansion card that generates visual output  to a display.More recent cards have other functions and capabilities as well, such as TV-tuner adapter,Light Pen,FireWire,multi-monitor(the ability to connect more than one monitor to the same card) and others.

Video graphics cards are using GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and they can be found on mobile phones, personal computers, embedded systems, gaming consoles, etc. It could also come up as VPU (Virtual Processing Unit) and it's job is to offload the graphics that the microporcessor is rendering in 2D or 3D.

A video card can be connected to the motherboard through several types of slots, such as AGP,PCI-X,PCI-Express,PCI-Express 2.0 and others, but more recent models usually connect to a PCI-Express or PCI-Express 2.0 slot. Some motherboards come with integrated graphics, commonly known as on-board graphics. These on-board graphics have a small quantity of memory, therefore they take an ammount of RAM memory from the system. An on-board graphics card is no good for aplications that require 3D rendering,or games due to its poor processing capacity.

Old cards have very little memory, commonly 16 or 32 MB of RAM.Modern cards on the other hand, come with and internal memory tat ranges from 128 MB up to 4 GB.Video cards use a high-speed memory such as VRAM,or WRAM,so it can be accessed by the GPU and circuitry. After 2003,producers introduced DDR memory, followed by DDR2,GDDR3,GDDR4,and even GDDR5.

All those rendered graphics have to use an output to get to the monitor,or display. The most common video outputs are VGA(a.k.a DE-15),DVI,VIVO,and so on.Lower you have a photo representing a 9-pin VIVO,a DVI,and a VGA output (in order of appearance from left to right).

The last years found ATI and Nvidia in a battle for graphics supremacy, both huge companies surprising the customers with faster and more powerful products each year.Their battle is also a part of the console war,as one develops the GPU for Sony's PlayStation and the other for Microsoft console,XBOX 360.

ATI Technologies
Acquired in 2006 by AMD,it is now known as AMD Graphics Product Group, and it's one of the biggest graphics card producers alongside Nvidia. ATI developed various series of graphics card, such as  the Rage series,Match Series,or Mobility Rage,However, the most popular and successful serie is Radeon.

The ATI Radeon serie was launched in 2000,and is ATI's 3D Accelerator card serie. The first of the serie is called DDR Radeon and represents ATI's first DirectX7 3D accelerator wich also introduced ATI's first hardware T&L engine.Later on,ATI expanded to console graphics, developing the Flipper GPU for Nintendo and Xenos for the XBOX 360.

Nvidia
The most popular serie of the company is the GeForce serie, named so by the public after a contest held by Nvidia. This graphics card serie has a large variety of generations. The first GeForce generation was GeForce 256 launched in August 31,1999.Soon after that came others such as GeForce 2,GeForce 3,GeForce 4,GeForce FX,Ge force 8,9,200 and 400 series.Altough the battle is tight,it is considered that Nvidia produces products more suitable for gaming, due to their implemented technologies like Nvidia PhysX and many other.
