Video Cards

The main task of a video card is to transfer digital signal from your PC into a visual display that drives your monitor. When it comes to video card brands there are two which lead the domain nowadays. These are NVidia and ATI Radeon, and you could think of them as the equivalents of Intel and AMD in the case of the processors. There are other brands as well but these two produce the video cards which have the highest quality.

Many people would like to know which of the two brands is the best, but the truth is that both of them are good. Both of the brands offer a great support and both of them are very dependable. The truth is that an ATI fan will tell you that the ATI video cards are the best whereas an NVidia one will say that the NVidia cards are the best. There are different things that you need to take in consideration when choosing the graphics card and in what follows I am going to present you those things.

The chipset, or the Graphical Processing Unit, is the processing chip which can be found in all of the video cards. What makes ATI and NVidia unique from this point of view is the fact that both of the brands have their own Graphical Processing Unit.

The bus interface is a slot which facilitates the connection between the video card and the motherboard. You should know that there are two types of bus interfaces, and these are PCI-Express and AGP. The PCI-Express is the newer type of interface and because of that it is capable of providing a better performance. More and more video cards use the PCI-Express video card, because unlike the AGP bus whose speed ranges from 2x - 8x, it has higher speeds.

The display interface is the connector that is being use to interface with the monitor and just like in the case of the bus interface, there are different types of display interfaces as well. One type of interface is the VGA which is suitable for the CRT monitors and for some older LCD monitors. They use an analog signal and because of that they are not so popular.

The DVI signal is used in the cases of the LCD monitors and it connects digital signal into a digital output display. You have the possibility of using two LCD monitors and in this case you will need a video card which has a dual channel DVI interface. This one is similar to the one which has a single DVI interface. The TV out and S-Video is the port which is used in order to connect the monitor into your TV or HDTV.
